Chapter 10
âAh, itâs you,â a bored-sounding Clement said to Kenneth from the top of his horse. âAnd it looks like youâve found dinner for you and your friends.
I exchanged a look with Aubrey, who straightened up.
The sacrifice looked up at Clement with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
But I wasnât convinced. Why was Clement, a known vampire hunter, being so nonchalant in front of a literal family of vampires with a human sacrifice?
I braced myself for a fight, but for some reason it didnât seem like Clement had any intention of exerting himself.
âWhat do you want this time?â Kenneth groaned, and he pulled the sacrifice closer to him.
âDonât ask questions you already know the answer to,â Clement replied with a laugh. âCome inside.â
I exchanged a confused look with Aubrey, who just shrugged.
Kenneth dragged the sacrifice back over to the door while Clement dismounted his horse and handed the reins over to his cronies. He took a few looks around the empty town strip before gesturing for us to follow him inside.
Was this some sort of trap?
âCome on, Aubrey,â Kenneth snarled. âWeâll be home soon.â
There was obviously some sort of agreement between Clement and Kenneth that we didnât know about, and I shuddered at the thought of it.
Aubrey and I followed them into the church. I knew that in order to cure Aubrey weâd have to free the girl, but weâd need to strategize.
I was beginning to get the impression that Aubrey thought she was a monster from a family of monsters. I could tell she wanted to be something other than just another McIntyre, but it was a difficult fate to escape. The fact that she was helping her brother conceal something in the real world only made it that much harder, but I knew that I could help her if I could just figure out what was going on.
So I just had more questions, fewer answers, and no idea what was going to happen next since Aubrey claimed this was new territory.
This, in my professional opinion, was an absolute shit show.
But I had a sneaking suspicion that weâd be able to take Kenneth out if we were just a little patient.
âDonât worry,â I whispered to Aubrey. âWe will get that girl free.â
The moment we were inside, I was hit with a strange wave of calm. It felt like we were miles away from the village, the mountain, and even the real world beyond that. It was only a simple white room with an altar and a golden cross, but I felt hopeful.
Clement paced around while one of the other men twiddled their thumbs and looked around authoritatively. The cronies quickly stepped back into the shadows, and we were left with the strange, deformed man.
âAlright,â he snarled, and my hair stood on end. âEnough of these games. Just give me what I want.â
I exchanged a look with Aubrey before turning my attention to her brother, who rolled his eyes and reached into his pocket. I wasnât all that surprised
